LIMS is a Laboratory Information System developed by LTech Australia.

BRC uses LIMS to record the results of test carried out at the Central Laboratory.

Water and sewerage from locations through out the region including those below are tested

  • Bundaberg
  • Kalkie/Bargara/Coral Cove
  • Innes Park
  • River view
  • Moore Park
  • Rocky Point
  • Gooburrum
  • Gin Gin
  • Monduran
  • Childers
  • Woodgate

All samples are brought into the lab and the results in are recorded in LIMS.
We also outsource some analysis as we are not equipped to do all analysis required by various government agencies.

Sewerage samples are tested for parameters according to each treatment plants release limits which are outlined in relevant ERAs (Environmental Relevant Activity). Generally we analyse final effluent samples for

  • Faecal coliforms
  • pH
  • conductivity
  • total nitrogen
  • total phosphorus
  • Biological Oxygen Demand
  • suspended solids
  • dissolved oxygen & ammonia.

Sewerage samples are outsourced every 6 months to test for:

  • mehtylene blue active substances
  • ammonia
  • phenolic compounds
  • total arsenic
  • total cadmium
  • total chromium
  • hexavalent chromium
  • total copper
  • total lead
  • total mercury
  • total nickel
  • total zinc
  • total organophosphate pesticides.

Biosolids (the dried waste from the sewerage treatment plants) is tested for % total solids and Faecal coliforms.
Septage (waste from septic tanks etc which is collected by licenced carriers & disposed of at our sewerage treatment plants) is also analysed every 6 months.

Water (source water, reservoir water & retic water) is analysed for microbiology & physical characteristics.

Microbial tests include:

  • E.coli
  • Standard Plate count.

Physical test include:

  • pH
  • conductivity
  • apparent colour
  • turbidity
  • absorbance @ 254nm
  • total hardness
  • calcium hardness
  • alkalinity
  • fluoride
  • chloride
  • nitrite
  • phosphate
  • sulphate
  • calcium
  • magnesium
  • sodium
  • potassium
  • manganese
  • iron
  • aluminium
  • copper

Outsourced testing on retic water includes:

  • inorganics
  • pesticides
  • total organic carbons
  • MIB/Geosmin
  • metals
  • THMs (trihalomethanes)
  • algae ID & count.

We also undertake environmental monitoring of underground water supplies at Moore Park and Woodgate (bores surrounding the sewerage treatment plant) & Coral cove (bores surrounding the golf course).
Bores are tested for faecal coliforms and physical parameters.

We also test water from:
local swimming areas - Moneys & Palmers creeks
Region swimming pools: Bundaberg Anzac pool, Norville pool, Gin Gin Pool.

Results for all these analysis are kept in LIMS, except for those which are outsourced, although we are looking at purchasing another application for LIMS which can import data from external sources. Results for the majority of these samples are also kept in excel spreadsheets - although this will be gradually phased out as we progress with LIMS.
